Par Par Lay and the Moustache Brothers

Par Par Lay percussionist in Mandalay

A Vertovian film using video footage of the world-famous Moustache Brothers comedy troupe featuring Par Par Lay shot in 2006, as well as still photographs of Mandalay (Burma) where they reside.

Par Par Lay and The Moustache Brothers are a troupe of comedians, dancers, and musicians from Mandalay who perform traditional Burmese vaudeville-style theater. They were known for many years as Burma’s only outspoken political dissidents under the oppressive military junta. Having been banned from performing publicly in front of Burmese audiences, they perform every night for a handful of tourists in their garage in Mandalay. Par Par Lay died on August 2, 2013, but the rest of the group continues to perform.
